5 Questions About Acne Treatments
1. How do we treat acne?
At Cosmos Clinic Gold Coast we offer a range of different options to treat acne. We can treat current acne as well as the acne scars left behind. The best treatments will depend on each persons situation. Our most effective treatment is called Photodynamic Therapy (PDT).
2.What is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)?
Treating acne using PDT is the only treatment that has shown to have long term effects. It does this by reducing the number of oil glands in the skin. Other treatments such as Vitamin A cream, antibiotics and benzly peroxide wash have only a 50% success rate when it comes to treating acne, whereas PDT has an 80-90% success rate. PDT is a great alternative to Roaccutane, which has many major side effects. Although Roaccutane does have a slightly higher success rate, many patients do not want to risk the side effects. With PDT over 30% of patients are cured of their acne after one treatment, 60% are cured after 2 treatments and 90% of patients are cured after 3 treatments of PDT (*Results can vary from patient to patient).
3. How does Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) work?
If you’ve ever noticed your skin clear up during the summer while you’re at the beach or in the pool, you might attribute this to the clean air, or the salt water, but in fact, it’s the sun which is helping to clear up your skin. The sun activates a substance in your oil gland called Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA). This acid clears out the bacteria which is blocked in your oil gland, which is what causes the acne. PDT recreates and enhances this natural process. Firstly an ALA cream is applied to the skin, which is only activated when our specialised UV-free, light source, the Omnilux, is switched on.
4. What does the PDT Acne Treatment procedure involve?
Firstly your surface layer of dead skin will be removed using microdermabrasion and acetone. The ALA cream will then be applied for up to an hour depending on your availability and the severity of your acne. The cream will then be removed and you will relax under the Omnilux light for 20 minutes.
5. Are there any side effects of PDT acne treatments?
There will be some redness after your treatment, and temporary swelling of the lips and around the eyes may occur, this will resolve after a few days. Darker pigmentation patches, such as liver spots may get darker temporarily, but will peel off leaving normal skin, which will take 7-10 days (*can vary from patient to patient). There is no risk of scarring from PDT treatments.
Some positive side effects include, improved skin texture, tone and complexion. As well as a reduction in pigmentation (freckles), reduced pore size, and a reduction of fine lines (wrinkles).
